THE GREATEST OF APPLE:iPHONE 7 & 7+

At long last, the iPhone 7 is here. At the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, Apple continued its traditional naming structure with the introduction of the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. We’ve been playing around with the upcoming iOS 10 operating system in beta for the better part of two months, and the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will ship with the new OS (read more about iOS 10 here), but we were excited to learn more about the actual phones.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new iPhones, and trust us, there’s a lot of interesting changes.

Waterproof design and durability

The iPhone 7 and the 7 Plus aren’t part of Apple’s major update cycle — you’ll have to wait for next year’s model for that, and of course rumors are already abound — but they do have some awesome new abilities.

Both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are (finally!) water- and dust-resistant (IP67), meaning you’re free to get them wet without worry. That means you’ll be able to take either of them underwater for about 30 minutes, up to 1 meter deep.

The two new devices maintain the same aluminum body and don’t look a ton different than 2015’s iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. They even share the same respective screen sizes: a 4.7-inch display on the 7, and a 5.5-inch screen for the 7 Plus. The Plus sports a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, and its smaller brother packs 1,334 x 750 pixels. Both screens are 25 percent brighter than the 6S and display a wide color gamut.

But the differences are still noticeable. Both of them feature a “pristine, mirror-like surface” and a high-gloss finish.
“The high-gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process,” according to the site. “Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone.”

Yes, Apple just recommended you get a case for the jet black iPhone 7 because it’s prone to scratches.

The new phones also do not feature antenna bands anymore on the top and bottom. Instead, those bands are now barely visible on the bottom and top edges.

Apple is also bringing more colors to the iPhone 7, so in addition to silver, gold, and rose gold, you can also choose between a glossy “jet black” and a matte black color. The jet black replaces the famous space grey color.

The camera on the rear still sticks out a little, but the most noticeable difference is on the iPhone 7 Plus. It features dual-cameras on the rear, similar to smartphones like the LG G5. It’s the first iPhone to ever have such a feature, which is easily identifiable on the back of the device. We’ll go into more detail on the cameras later in this article.

Setup Timeout Error: Setup took longer than 30 seconds to complete.
Finally, the iconic home button now features a new version of the pressure-sensitive and Touch ID sensor. It no longer actually clicks, but simulates one via a vibration like the Force Touch trackpad on MacBooks. The Force Touch Home button offers Taptic feedback and this can be programmed via third-party applications to offer “new feelings and experiences.”

Xiaomi’s Redmi 3 offers a massive 4,100mAh battery and all-metal body for just $107

~Rishin lal
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomiannounced its latest budget handset today, the Redmi 3. The device features all-metal construction and a large 4,100mAh battery, which are both unusual in phones below

The Redmi 3’s back features a lattice design made up of 4166 stars woven together

The 5-inch Redmi 3 runs on the company’s MIUI 7 Android software layer and packs a 720p display, an octa-core Snapdragon 616 processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB of onboard storage.

There’s a 13-megapixel camera with fast autofocus on the rear and a 5-megapixel snapper in front. You can use either two SIMs simultaneously or use one of the slots for a microSD card to expand storage by 128GB.

The Redmi 3 should be able to offer serious competition to budget favorites from last year like the $180 Moto G and the 4.7-inch Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3($250).

Of course, it remains to be seen exactly how many hours of use Xiaomi can eke out of that massive battery; the company promises that the latest version of its MIUI OS includes optimizations to extend battery life by 25 percent.

It also hasn’t specified which version of Android is on the Redmi 3 — if it’s runningAndroid 6.0 Marshmallow, the built-in Doze mode that puts your phone to sleep could help you put off charging the device for even longer than usual.

The phone will become available tomorrow in China; as with other recent Xiaomi releases, the company is seeking feedback from its other markets before launching the device beyond its home country.

2016 Google Tracker: Everything Google is working on for the new year

~Rishin lal
It’s that time of the year again—welcome to the Google Tracker! This is a bi-annual series where we recap every ongoing project (that we know about, at least) inside of Google’s sprawling empire.

Though from now on, perhaps we should say, “Every ongoing project inside of Alphabets sprawling empire.” “Google” is now a mere company inside of “Alphabet,” the newly formed umbrella company created by Google’s founders. Most of the Google side projects we’ve been tracking in the past have been spun off into companies inside of Alphabet, but rest assured we’re still keeping track of everything.

As always, the Tracker is a big roundup of previous announcements, rumors, and a bit of speculation. The 2015 entries worked out well—the Chromecast 2, Google On, Google Photos, YouTube Gaming, and tons of Android features were represented. We can’t promise everything listed here will be released in 2016, but this is certainly a running list of everything we’ve heard about. If you’ve been slacking all of 2015 and not paying attention to the news, consider this your “Google CliffsNotes” for the upcoming year

Apple’s 10m music subscribers

Apple has passed 10m subscribers for its music streaming service, taking six months to hit a milestone that took its arch-rival Spotify six years to hit, say people familiar with the matter.

The rapid growth of Apple Music, which launched in more than 100 countries in June, raises the stakes in streaming, a form of distribution that offers hope to the music industry after more than a decade in the doldrums.

“It’s good news that Apple is making streaming work but it is also going to accelerate the decline of downloads,” said Mark Mulligan, music industry analyst with Midia Research. Apple was rapidly gaining on Spotify and at its current growth rate had “the potential to be the leading music subscription service sometime in 2017.”

Streaming is becoming the dominant form of digital music consumption and is growing rapidly as download sales decline. In the US, total sales of album downloads fell 9 per cent in 2014 while sales of individual tracks declined 12 per cent, according to Nielsen Music data. However, demand for streaming increased more than 50 per cent, with 164bn songs streamed.

Spotify and Apple have a clear lead over the competition. Deezer, the France-based streaming service, has more than 6.3m users and last October scrapped a €300m initial public offering that would have valued it at €1bn. Tidal, the artist-owned service led by hip hop artist Jay Z, reportedly hit 1m subscribers in the same month.

Spotify, which has a valuation of more than $8bn, has laid the groundwork for an initial public offering. By the time it hit 10m subscribers in 2014, the service had 40m active users in 56 markets.

The Swedish company’s growth has accelerated since 2014. In June it said it had reached 20m paying subscribers out of a total of more than 75m monthly listeners. That figure is likely to have increased further in the subsequent six months, during which time Spotify has been riding high in Apple’s App Store charts. This weekend, it was the third top-grossing app in the US App Store, suggesting that many iPhone users are already paying for Spotify subscriptions using their iTunes accounts.

Just before Christmas, The Beatles back-catalogue arrived on streaming services, bringing one of the last major holdouts to digital streaming. Last month Apple Music was made available on Sonos wireless speakers, its first partnership with a hi-fi maker.

Music is expected to become increasingly important to Apple’s 2016 device launches. The 9to5Mac blog reported last week that the company will ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack on the next generation iPhone, the standard on portable music players dating back to the original Sony Walkman in 1979. Instead digital headphones would connect to its Lightning port, which is also used for charging and data transfer to and from a PC. As well as providing higher-quality audio, the change could accelerate a growing move towards wireless headphones, which can already connect over Bluetooth to the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Apple declined to comment on rumoured changes to its headphone socket or its music streaming subscribers.

That would enable Apple to make the next iPhone even thinner or free up more space for other components such as batteries. At the same time, the company would be able to promote compatible headphones from its Beats subsidiary, which it acquired for $3bn in 2014 and formed the technical basis of its music subscription service.

Specifications compared: Google’s Nexus 5X vs. Nexus 6P

By rishin

For the first time ever, Google announced two brand new Nexus phones alongside each other at the same launch. The two devices are clearly different, from materials and design to specs and price, and each will appeal to different consumers. But will you go for the plastic-clad, smaller LG Nexus 5X or for the more premium Nexus 6P designed and manufactured by Huawei?

It may seem an obvious choice, but there are already differing opinions among the technoest staff and —

To me, most of the benefits the Huawei Nexus has over the LG are obvious. They are what gives the device its rightful flagship status. A faster processor, more RAM and a higher resolution display aren’t out of place. The one thing that impresses me most is that both phones have exactly the same camera. They both use a 12.3MP Sony sensor with f/2.0 aperture and large pixels to give great low light images. What’s more, they can both shoot 4K video, and take bursts of photos which you can use for creating your own animated GIFs. or choosing the best image. Both also pack a USB Type-C connector and support Quick-Charge technology.

One other feature they both share (apart from the software) is the Nexus Imprint fingerprint recognition technology which Google claims can accurately recognize fingerprints at ridiculous speeds, and will keep getting better the more you use it.

Perhaps the most obvious difference is the design. While LG’s Nexus 5X uses a comfortable plastic shell, similar to the last Nexus 5. Huawei has gone with an elegant and beautiful all-metal design with diamond-cut edges. While the 6P is wider and taller, it’s amazingly still thinner than the less expensive LG-made Nexus.

Then we get to the all-important displays. It’s Quad HD versus Full HD, AMOLED vs. LCD, Gorilla Glass 4 vs. Gorilla Glass 3. In every way, the Huawei’s panel is a step up from LG’s. It’s sharper, bigger, more durable and will undoubtedly have more vivid colors and better contrast levels.

As a side note, if you really love good stereo sound from your phone, the Huawei is your only real option here. LG’s only has one loudspeaker, although there is consolation in the fact that it’s front facing, and not hidden on the back or bottom edge.

The most important thing for consumers is price. At $379, the Nexus 5X looks an absolute steal. As does the Huawei Nexus 6P at just $499. For reference, the most expensive Nexus 6P with 128GB storage is the same price ($649) as the least expensive iPhone 6s, and that says a lot. For a phone with this feature set and access to Google’s latest services, that’s a fantastic price. As a kicker, both new Nexii come with three months of Google Play Music for free and $50 Play Store credit.

You can pre-order the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P direct from Google, with delivery in 4-5 weeks.

Oneplusto launch Oneplus X with dual cameras and rear fingerprint sensor

By RISHIN lal

After the launch of their 2016 Flagship Killer, the Oneplus Two, Chinese OEM manufacturer, Oneplus is planning to launch a budget version of their smartphone, currently nicknamed the Oneplus X or Oneplus Mini.

Expected to release by December 2015, this new smartphone will most probably have a dual camera setup and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, if renders are to be believed.

In a previous interview to USA Today, the company’s co-founder, Carl Pei, had hinted at another device launch in the same year. This just might be one he was talking about. The pricing is expected to be around $249 but there is little confirmation on that.

Observing the front of the device, obtained from the renders, it seems pretty close to the design language that Oneplus has used on their previous two smartphones. On the rear, although, it is a different ball game altogether. The design seems unique and seems to be a bold experiment from the company.

While we shall wait for official confirmation on this news, Oneplus is definitely coming up with a budget smartphone this year and this will be our biggest bet. Stay tuned for more on this.
